Run to These Snacks, When Cravings Call

We all crave junk food, I’m an all dressed girl myself, and there’s a reason why. Studies show foods high in sugar and fat increase dopamine levels in our brain. Dopamine produces feelings of pleasure and satisfaction.

Instead of removing food as a source of pleasure, can we shift it in a healthier direction? You bet! The next time you’re craving something naughty, turn to this list for an all-natural replacement.

Roasted chickpeas and fava beans vs Potato Chips

Crunchy, savoury, salty. Who needs chips when you have these guys. Plus, they are a great source of protein and leave you feeling satisfied. Available in a variety of flavours, or roast your own with a touch of avocado oil, sea salt, and spices.

Raw cacao vs chocolate

In its raw and natural form, cacao has one of the highest known antioxidant values. Research suggests cacao’s content of the chemical phenylethylamine produces feelings of happiness. We knew chocolate made us happy! For a quick fix, mix raw cacao powder with coconut oil, maple syrup, and a pink of sea salt. Eat with banana, strawberries, or almonds. I love stirring in natural hazelnut butter for homemade Nutella.

Nicecream vs Ice Cream

Frozen bananas can be blended into a delicious ice cream substitute. The key is allowing bananas to ripen before freezing, which increases natural sweetness. Bananas contain high levels of tryptophan, which helps produce serotonin. Imagine an ice cream that induces feelings of happiness after the last bite.

Dried fruit vs soft candy

Dried organic fruit is satisfyingly chewy and sweet. Plus, it sticks to your teeth the same way gummy worms do. Its sugar is naturally occurring and paired with vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants. Just make sure there are no added sugars or preservatives. Pineapple, mango and peaches are my favourite.

Frozen grapes vs popsicles

If you haven’t tried frozen grapes, you must. Definitely one of my favourite snacks, grapes have high nutrients with low calories. Red grapes contain resveratrol, the same antioxidant found in red wine. Pick up fresh, organic grapes and freeze overnight.

Dates vs caramel

Sweet and juicy, Medjool dates are a gift from Mother Nature.  This tree fruit is packed with energy making it a perfect pick me up.  Dates are very sweet in taste, with a chewy fudge like texture.

Incaberries vs sour keys

Incaberries are a superfood from tropical regions of South America.  This small exotic berry is orange in colour and eaten in its dried form.  Its sweet and sour taste is kind of incredible. Plus, incaberries are great as a midnight snack, as they contain melatonin which helps with beauty sleep.
